The story behind #100tofollow

A few weeks ago I wrote a little post called What would you do with your last Tweets? Here’s one of the key thoughts from that post:
I’m approaching my 10,000th entry, or Tweet, on Twitter. I have a little over 400 to go before I hit that milestone. As I pondered this, as I do every few days, a new thought occurred to me: maybe 10,000 is enough. Maybe I should quit Twitter at 10,000 and say “good enough, then.” After all, that’s a lot of Tweets. And, if I really wanted to, I could probably hit that milestone in a day or two if I worked at it for several hours per day.
Then I thought: if I’m setting an upper limit, this means that I have a finite number of Tweets to use. How would I use them wisely?
This idea has been churning around my brain for the last few weeks. There’s something nice and tidy about ending something with 10000 entries. It had a lot of appeal. It still does.
Somehow I wanted to make this milestone a bit special. Here’s what I decided upon today: for the last set of Tweets, I would like out to 100 other Twitter users whose content I really enjoyed. Call it my Suggested User List, if you will.
Therefore, for this special occasion, I created a new tag called #100tofollow. Unless I’ve done my math incorrectly, I’ve linked out to 100 different Twitter users using the #100tofollow tag (click on the link to the left to see a collection of Tweets that use this tag, including all of mine.)
I wanted to do something useful with this last set of Tweets. I decided that the most useful things I could do were:
- link out to the people whose content that I really enjoy
- at the same time, pay them some respect with some link love and descriptions to boot
And finally, Tweet 10000 is a link back to this #100tofollow post.
There it is. Please check them all out. I’m sure you’ll enjoy their stuff. I’m particularly proud of the Tweets I made for @wilw and @warrenellis. If you have a bunch of people that you want to recognize, feel free to use the #100tofollow tag. Heck, it might even spice up #followfriday a bit. Judging by the response I get, I’m sure a lot of people will appreciate being recognized like this!
