8 Things About StumbleUpon That Annoy Me
social media April 24th. 2008, 6:17amLooks like he’s stumbling over something…
First of all, I love StumbleUpon. I think it’s an awesome website and tool. It’s a wonderful way to get people to visit your blog. I get a lot of traffic through SU and I’ve come into contact with some pretty cool people there. Overall, it’s a good way to share info about websites and it’s more fun than your standard social bookmarking function.
However… there are some things that I’ve found over time which I don’t like or which have caused me some problems. Many of these issues have been covered elsewhere, so they may not be new to most of you. Nonetheless, these are the things that have “tripped me up” a bit, so to speak.
- Keep your post slugs simple - no special characters. StumbleUpon especially hates commas; it makes them very hard to submit your posts to StumbleUpon without doing some trickery. Wordpress in particular tries to take your post title and use it as your post slug, which becomes part of the URL for your post. If you insist on using these additional characters, take care to type in a post slug using just numbers and letters separated by hyphens.
- Use the correct URL. Some sites, like the Triond family of websites, will run articles over multiple webpages. It would make sense to Stumble the very first page. Otherwise, you may accidentally submit multiple pages, which could dilute the value of your Stumble.
- Tags can be overwritten. If you are the kind of blogger who is very particular about how you want your submission tagged, it’s possible that a subsequent Stumbler may change them. Keep your eye on this.
- Tags can also be incorrectly chosen by the submitter. I’ve seen some weird choices, including adult-oriented tags, where they probably weren’t intended to be used. It could be the result of using a plug-in to automate the submission process. Similar to problem 3.
- Remember to “thumb up” the post before clicking on the Comment button. Otherwise, the post might not be correctly registered as a “thumbs up”.
- Unfortunately, people will occasionally downvote your submissions. Resist the temptation to reciprocate unless the downvoter is being abusive. Even then, use caution
- The 200 mutual friend limit. After awhile you just can’t add any more friends, which sucks.
- The Send To function is very annoying, especially if you have more than 35 mutual friends, because you have to scroll for several seconds until you find the friend you are looking for. Yes, you can argue that the Send To function can be abused by spammers. However, if I want to send a link to someone whose user ID begins with the letter Z, then I have to scroll all the way to the bottom. It gets really, really tedious with 200 mutual friends. Maybe there’s an add-on or other application out there that circumvents this problem?
None of these problems seriously damage StumbleUpon, they are merely annoyances. However, they do represent some ways that the service could be improved. Are you reading, StumbleUpon?

#4, #7 and #8 are ultra annoying. I see people tag stuff so badly, I can only imagine it’s a deliberate ploy to have an article blocked for being irrelevant.
The #1 annoying thing about StumbleUpon is not being able to see the number of total votes for an article.
Maybe it’s a feature of their commercial advertising package? Who knows…

Ooooh, sometimes the way commas are registered in their system distorts it to the point where it then becomes a big black gookly mess of characters! copy paste certainly becomes difficult, which means longer submission time in volved. (yesm i am one of those that seeks out a snippet of text from the post)
But, I think things have changed with the tagging though. Tagging can only be changed by the submitter. Unless reported to SU as not a relevant tag and then THEY change it.
Overall, I love SU is a second home for me. (yes, I am a bit obsessed with SU)

Mark,
I totally agree and #8 for sure is a pain but I figured out that if you hit the send to and then the letter you want on your keyboard it goes directly to it, like “z”. Much faster but still a pain.

@Wayne - darn it, I was going to include your #1, too!
@SpostareDuro - yes, that’s another excellent point about how SU changes commas into that weird code (ASCII or something?)
@Kristen - I need to change browsers, then, because your short cut doesn’t work on mine (IE 6.0 ATM, but I do use Firefox elsewhere)

Oh, sorry, yes that would be in Firefox. I forget that not everyone uses Firefox. Try it, you’ll like it!

@Kristen - I do use Firefox, just not everywhere that I use a PC

Yeah, the send to option is fantastic, my friends and I use it for actual sharing of sites. The 200 friend limit ties into this, I think it’s because Stumbleupon actually uses the dictionary definition of friend, “someone who is your FRIEND”, not the myspace definition of “someone who I saw once online and shared like one link, OMG FREIND!!11″.

I think one of SU’s shortcomings has to do with the thumbs-down function. It isn’t entirely clear what thumbsing-down a page actually does. On one hand, I suppose it makes it less likely for a future stumbler to stumble upon the page your thumbs-downed (in which case people have a right to be annoyed at chronic thumbs-downers). On the other hand, if you hover your mouse over the thumbs-down button, you’ll see that it says “No more like this”. Well, what about if I stumble on a car related page showing a car I really don’t like? If I thumbs-down the page, is SU going to show me less cars I don’t like… or is it going to show me less car related pages, period? I assume that I’ll see less car related pages - which I don’t want to have happen! So therefore, I’m actually inclined to thumbs-up pages showing cars that I don’t like.
I often see people thumbsing-down cartoons they don’t find funny, as if SU is going to somehow interpret their sense of humour based on the cartoons they thumbs-down, versus the ones they thumbs-up. In reality, I bet these people are simply seeing *less* cartoons. Maybe that’s what they want, but I bet it isn’t. Bottom line, my feeling is that the only reason to thumbs something down is if you really don’t like the topic that’s just come up, and want to see less of it… in which case, remove that topic from your preferences.

Every one of the hundreds of lame web comics I have ever Stumbled is under Humor not Cartoons. As such, I have removed humor from my preferences since I obviously have different taste when it comes to what I think is funny than the average Stumbler.

How about the fact that as far as I am concerned once you rate a page you NEVER have to “stumble” on it AGAIN!!
April 24th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
@The Phantom Linker - the 200 “friend” limit does sort of tie in to that famous rule of 150, or whatever it is
@Josh - as far as I know, all the “thumbs down” button will do is to change the random stumbling algorithm so that you tend not to get those kinds of sites again
@Joe - hm, I’ll remember the Cartoons vs. Humor difference
@Lady D 71 - are you saying that’s good or bad?
