@Heather - OK, here's a differing opinion to consider:

1) If you are an active StumbleUpon user, I think you are a social media user. It's part of the overall spectrum of social media.

2) I find that Facebook useful in certain ways.

3) I have a MySpace page that I rarely use.

4) Mixx and Shoutwire serve their own purposes and have their own strengths and weaknesses.

5) I'd agree with your boss about Twitter.

6) I disagree with your assessment of social media as only being good for links and keyword saturation links, although I'm not sure I exactly understand what the latter is. What a lot of people don't realise is that participating in the social media communities can actually be more valuable than hitting the home page of any particular site. The people that you meet and develop as contacts can pay off more long term dividends than the blog or website page views associated with hitting Digg's front page.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Cheers!

Facebook Sucks, MySpace Sucks, Stumble is Great and as I see it from my bosses point of view ( He is one of you social media nuts but with more off-line businesses) Twitter rules for direct contact. Mixx and Shoutwire really sucks. I think you waste a lot of time on those sites if you are looking for people to come to your site. They are only good for links and keyword saturation links.

@kimberly - Facebook can work well as long as your contacts use it, although that's true of any other service.

Another Twit vote here. I'm involved in a few Ning communities but have finally figured out how to use Twitter without it taking up too much of my already limited time.

I've found some truly useful links on Twitter that haven't been blogged about much so it has a lot of usefulness aside from the fun/social aspect.

I like Twitter best... found this via your Tweet.

I like MY own Ning.com network.. the Maureen Corps.. it's like MySpace but only if your name is Maureen. I think there are four of us Maureens now... maybe five.
I belong to other Ning.com networks but nothing as is satisfying as the Maureen Corps... and there's nothing going on there at all...

I do Facebook and Linkedin barely.

I do ActiveRain which is a real estate social network.

I would have agree with the others and say Twitter. It's amazing! It forces people to really concise with their message. I can also reach a large audience quickly, and get feedback too.

Great responses, everyone, and welcome if this is the first time that you've commented here (or seen this blog, for that matter!)

Interesting how Twitter is mentioned by 4 of 5 so far (but not that surprising, perhaps... :) )

I vote for Twitter first, followed by Facebook. But Twitter is my latest obsession and it is turning out to be much more than just 140-character what-are-you-doing statements. I'm having useful conversations with people I don't know, and I'm getting a lot of cool links sent, as well as learning about blogs (like this one) I didn't know existed till now. I'm really glad I got here, BTW. And Facebook is cool for re-connecting with people I knew ages ago but lost touch with.
